Responsible Engineer

HAVEN-1 BATTERY SYSTEM

As the responsible engineer for the Haven-1 Space Station battery system at Vast Space, I lead the design, analysis, and delivery of a 50 kWh Li-ion battery to support the first commercial crewed space station in low Earth orbit. This system is developed to meet the rigorous JSC-20793 standard for crew safety and reliability.

I manage an 8-person cross-functional team through the full product lifecycle—designing, building, and testing flight-ready, space-rated battery systems entirely in-house. My role extends beyond battery systems to encompass the mechanical ownership of avionics hardware across multiple spacecraft programs, including both crewed and uncrewed missions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing electromechanical parts and assemblies in Siemens NX

  • Performing structural and thermal simulations in ANSYS

  • Creating detailed technical drawings using ASME Y14.5 GD&T

  • Building and managing an integrated master schedule for the battery program, including mechanical and electrical design, manufacturing, firmware/software development, testing, reviews, etc.

  • Collaborating daily with manufacturing engineers, machinists, test engineers, and avionics technicians on the shop floor

This work has been integral to Vast’s mission to establish a human presence in space, starting with Haven-1—the world’s first crewed space station designed for commercial launch.
